Things that are widely known

Wallpaper is something which has become popular the in the 60s and 70s where after there was a significant reduction in the use of wallpaper.

Recently however, this decorative trend has once again surfaced.

There are several reasons for this recurrence such as thousands of Instagram posts and then there is the ever popular home decoration TV shows which often put some time aside for wallpaper decoration.

It has also presented itself as a highly efficient medium which can be used with ease and at a relatively low cost to very quickly make dramatic changes in a room or office.

There are many people not so long ago who was completely convinced that wallpaper is a part of a distant past but that was not to be.

There are today an extensive range of wallpaper which is made available in every pattern imaginable and also in a wide range of colors and textures and therefore as far as this medium is concerned there is something for absolutely everybody.

In an amazingly short time just about any wall can be covered and the resulting look can blow people away.

The importance of preparation

With absolutely every maintenance or repair job the ultimate success of that project will critically depend on the amount of preparation which has been done.

This will apply to absolutely every do-it-yourself project and in fact without proper preparation the rest of the job may end up falling short of your expectations.

This is also true when it comes to the hanging of wallpaper.

For best results you actually need walls which is completely smooth and also perfectly flat.

Absolutely every hole, dent or bump should be fixed as effectively as possible and the areas should be perfectly smoothed to prevent a situation where those defects are molded over by your wallpaper.

This is the same thing which happens when painting the underlying defects can be clearly seen as the paint has been forced to mold or stretch over those imperfections.

This will not result in the best outcome as far as your wallpaper project is concerned. It is also advisable to apply the same color of paint than your wallpaper to the wall just to eliminate a situation where the wall may show through.

Even the most perfect seams may still not be able to prevent this from happening.

Some experts are advising people to use an oil-based primer in order to properly seal the wall and this should then be followed by a coat of wallpaper primer.

This is important both when it comes to installation and also eventual removal of your wallpaper.

Without the use of the primer, installation and especially removal can be highly problematic.

Determining how to best fit the wallpaper

Before you can actually start to apply wallpaper to the walls you need to determine what will be the best approach when hanging your chosen wallpaper in a specific spot.

Working this out is important especially if you’re making use of patterned wallpaper.

Another important consideration is the seams of your wallpaper and is best to decide in advance whether they should fall.

Naturally, the less visible seams there is the better will the end result be.

There is also the issue of symmetry where you ensure that this seems will always be visible on opposite walls.

These are important considerations because regardless of what wallpaper you decide to use it is an inescapable fact that for every single room there is also a most logical or a preferred layout method and this is why it is so important to always determine the best layout in advance.

This has to be done before the actual cutting starts and naturally before proceeding to the actual hanging of that wallpaper.

After all of these things has been properly done and you wallpaper has been cut according to specification it will also be just as important to make absolutely certain that each of the wallpaper panels is always hanging absolutely level and straight.

This is why it is best to make use of a laser line which should be of sufficient length preferably 5m and this should be used on each wall as you proceed with the hanging of your wallpaper.

The correct hanging process

Most of the available and popular traditional wallpapers will require a person to use a particular type of wallpaper paste most often a product which has been specifically recommended by the manufacturer of that wallpaper. In most cases it is necessary to allow the paste to soak into that wallpaper.

You will need to apply the paste evenly and this should be done until one half of the surface of that particular wallpaper has been covered.

That covered area should then be folded in upon itself and now proceed to apply paste to the other half and once again fold it back towards the middle so that it meets with the other end of the wallpaper. This process is referred to as booking.

After an interval of approximately 3 minutes you can proceed to actually hang your wallpaper.

Naturally the logical starting point is always the top left of your wall. Therefore, hang your first wallpaper and do not neglect to make use of your laser line in order to ensure that this hanging process is done correctly.

It is important to have a plastic smoothing tool available because once your wallpaper has been hanged this tool must now be used to ensure that there are absolutely no bubbles between the wallpaper and the wall.

The logical starting point will always be the middle of the wallpaper and then work outwards towards the outer edge of your wallpaper until all of the bubbles have been removed.

Be very careful to ensure that you do not stretch the wallpaper and this will also apply as all other pieces of the wallpaper is hanged. A new razor can be used to cut all of the excess wallpaper from the top or the bottom but always take sufficient care not to cause any tears in that wallpaper.
